TheCollege of St. Mark dates back to 1258, when it was a Benedictine Infirmary attached to Walden Abbey, which stood on the site now occupied by Audley End House. The College was almost entirely rebuilt in the 17th Century and, since then, has been used in various ways, at one time as almhouses, and another as farmbuildings. It is a Grade One listed building, consisting of two courtyards and a central block. The College can accommodate up to thirty-eight people in small bedroom units, each furnished in a homely style, with en-suite or adjacent toilet facilities. The central block houses the kitchen, dining room, with its 17th Century fireplace, comfortable lounge, lecture room, small meeting room and the Chapel. The College is owned by the Anglican Diocese of Chelmsford and is operated by the College of St. Mark Trust. Its object is to help young people, through leisure time activities, to develop their physical, mental and spiritual capacities, helping them to grow to full maturity as individuals and members of society, within the context of a caring Christian community. |
